Global Troubleshooting
Common Problems

  • "I can't exit the program"
Ensure that there are no unsaved records by checking the Windows menu. Any window bar currently "open" will be shown in half-tone. Return to the open window(s) and save the record. It should now be possible to exit the program.

  • "I can't add a record"
Check that all other screens have been saved before attempting to add another record or edit a record in another screen. Ensure that the correct screen is active before clicking the add or edit icons on the Toolbar.

  • "My dates are 'backwards'", ie. dd/mm/yy instead of mm/dd/yy or vice versa.
Go to the Windows Control Panel, Regional Settings then select the Regional Settings tab. Select the appropriate regional setting; for example, English (Canadian or American) for mm/dd/yy or English (Australian) for dd/mm/yy.

Do not simply go to the Date tab and change the format there, this will not solve the problem.

  • "I clicked the minimise button in the top right corner of my screen, and now nothing works"
Exit and restart the program. For some reason the Windows minimise button disrupts FoxPro. Always use the drop down menu located in the top left corner of an open screen and select minimise or close.

  • "I've lost my Browser"
The Browser Screen will disappear off the screen when adding or editing property records. To restore the Browser click on the bottom left icon on the Toolbar.

  • "How do I know which is the active window?"
The active window has a blue ribbon at the top of the window.

  • "Why does the message [Syntax Error] appear when I select "verify" in the Expression Builder?"
The expression entered in the Expression Builder has not been typed using proper syntax. For instance a "space" may be missing after a command. Check the syntax and try again.

  • "Why does the message [Unknown phrase or keyword in Command] appear when I press "verify" in the Expression Builder?"
The expression entered in the Expression Builder has a syntax error, or the computer is being instructed to perform a task in a way that it does not recognise. Check the syntax in the expression (being particularly careful about spelling, such as "commitmnt " and syntax, "date_appl") and try again.

  • "I suddenly have two entries for the same holding/property in the Browser screen"
This is caused by adding a record to or editing a record in the Maintain or Histories screen and failing to save the entry. The Browser is then used to move to another property, and the details from the previous, un-saved, record overwrites the newly selected property.

This is a particularly messy and difficult problem to undo, and should be referred to the person(s) responsible for Global administration as soon as possible. To achieve a satisfactory outcome all known holdings must be cross-checked against the system to work out which holdings have been overwritten.

  • "I want to cut/copy and paste a piece of text within a field.  I used the copy button on the Toolbar, but it didn't work"
The copy button on the Toolbar is used to copy records, not text. To copy text within a field, highlight the required text and use the copy and paste commands located in the Edit menu, which is at the top of the screen.

  • "I have selected the Seek Record icon from the Toolbar and have entered the Property Id, but the error message [No Record Found] keeps appearing".
The system is case-sensitive so check whether the original record was entered in upper or lower case. It is recommended that all records be entered using the same case to avoid this problem (upper case would be recommended over lower). Check the Property Id for such things as spaces. The system is looking for an exact copy of the original record entered in the system.

  • "I am trying to add a new exploration or mining holding record and I can't save the Maintain screen"
When the save icon on the Toolbar is shown is half-tone, the computer does not have all the information it requires. A blacked-out field in the Maintain screen is a mandatory field and must be filled in otherwise it will not be possible to save the record.

  • "When adding a new exploration or mining holding record to the Maintain screen I can't get the dates or rent to calculate".
For some reason Global is not recognising the information it is trying to calculate from. First, check the information already entered in the Maintain screen, for example check to see what has been entered in the "State" field to assess whether it is exactly what has been entered in the States item code list. Secondly, ensure that the entries in the Action, Legislate and Rental screens for that holding type, in that state or jurisdiction, are correct.
